G5 and Panther — first impression
After almost 20 years of working on a Mac I finally broke down and for the first time bought the top-of-the-line machine, a dual 2 ghz G5. I’m almost there on transferring files from my old G4 upgraded G3 B&W (what a great machine) and will likely be posting my experiences once I’m done, but I can already say:
- I really dislike the use of brushed metal for the finder (help Unsanity?)
- The G5 is just plain fast. Everything, even iCal, is as quick as you could want.
- Panther is faster and more refined and Exposé is going to change the way I work. It still isn’t overwhelming, though I might feel different if not for the G5.
- Back to Mail from Mailsmith — just love the threaded message feature and the addition of sending “Windows friendly” attachments. And the speedup is great (G5 or Panther?)
- No problems with Palm syncing, external Firewire drives, or any apps so far.
- The G5 is practically silent
- I dislike the brushed metal finder more with every passing second
